Descriptive: Personification

A personal recount generally follows this structure: introduction, tension, climax, resolution, reflection. To lead up to a high point in the climax, ensure the build-up is suspenseful.

Language for Impact: Personification

Another way to describe your experiences in a relatable way is to use personification. Personification attaches human attributes to animals, ideas or objects to emphasize on a specific quality that they may have.
  • Without Personification

    What happens

Your description tells instead of show. As such, your writing is less impactful.

  • With Personification

    What happens

Your description shows more than tells,
    drawing your readers’ attention and
imagination to a specific quality of
    your subject.

Example:

Write about a place where you experience strong emotions.
  • Without Personification

    • My couch is the place where I feel the most comfortable.
    • The forest was frightening, filled with scary shadows of the tall trees.
  • With Personification

    • I always find comfort in the welcoming arms of my couch.
    • The forest was frightening, clawing after us with its long, never ending shadows.
