Subject-Verb Agreement

Confused as to whether to use a plural or singular verb when there are multiple subjects? Look out for sentence connectors “and” and “or”.

  • And

When subjects are joined by the connector and, use the plural form.

“We’re all here, the lights and noise is/are blinding.”

    • “We’re all here, the lights and noise are blinding.”

    • “We’re all here, the lights and noise is blinding.”

The reason: the subjects “lights” and “noise” are connected by “and”.

  • Or

When subjects are joined by the connector or, the verb should agree with the subject closest to it.

Either the speakers or her microphone is/are faulty.

    • Either the speakers or her microphone is faulty.

    • Either the speakers or her microphone are faulty.

The reason: the subject closest to “or” is singular.
