Subject-Verb Agreement Part 1

What is the one ‘s’ rule?

In a  complete sentence, there is a subject and a verb. Usually, either the subject or the verb will end with an “-s”. But there should only be one “-s”!

  • SINGULAR SUBJECT

For a singular subject, add an “-s” to the end of the verb

e.g. The alien gaze/gazes at the moon.

    • The alien gazes at the moon.

    • The alien gaze at the moon.

  • PLURAL SUBJECT

For a plural subject, remove the “-s” at the end of the verb

e.g. The aliens gaze/gazes at the moon.

    • The aliens gaze at the moon.

    • The aliens gazes at the moon.
