Farther vs Further

Do you get confused on when to use ‘farther’ and ‘further’? Nope, they are not interchangeable, there is a small distinction between the two! Here are some tips to learn how to differentiate them.

  • Farther

    A measure of physical distance, how “far” something is.

    e.g. The coffee shop is farther than the mall.

     

     

    • John bought a rare invisibility cloak. He put it on and walked in his underpants farther down the road thinking he was invisible

    • John bought a rare invisibility cloak. He put it on and walked in his underpants further down the road thinking he was invisible.

    Tip: If you can measure the physical distance, use farther. In the example, we can physically measure how far John has walked down the road.

  • Further

    A measure of figurative distance. It also means something additional.

    e.g. I am further away from my dreams.
    I have no further questions.

    • However, that could not be any further from the truth. He had been scammed.

    • However, that could not be any farther from the truth. He had been scammed.

    Tip: If you cannot measure the physical distance, use further. In the example, we cannot physically measure the truth.
