Descriptive: Engaging the Question

You’ve learnt so far that identifying and decoding keywords and directional words are crucial first steps in approaching any essay question. Once you’ve settled that, the next step is to expand on these keywords. This helps show your reader how you’re engaging with the question requirements.

  • Non-expanded

You re-use the keywords and directional words throughout your entire essay.

  • Expanded

You use synonyms, paraphrases and examples to expound on the question.

This also helps you paint a clearer image of your subject.
