Use a comma when…

Commas help to connect three or more items in a series.

    • Sam ate a slice of pizza, a sandwich, a burrito, and a waffle before her tennis training.

    • Sam ate a slice of pizza, and a sandwich before her tennis training.

  • connecting clauses

Commas help to connect two independent clauses in a sentence.

    • Sam ate too much for lunch, and she is too full to exercise.

    • Sam ate too much for lunch, and is too full to exercise.
