ENGAGING THE OPPONENT

It is important to address the opposing stance in your argument. The placement of the opposing stance in your essay affects how convincing your argument is.
  • Opposing stance first

    Pros:
You have the rest of the essay to rebut your stance.

    Use this when:
The opposing stance can be strongly rebutted by the points in your essay.

  • Opposing stance last

    Pros:
You can get your reader aboard your stance before introducing an opposing view.

    Use this when:
The opposing stance does not discredit the points you make but adds nuance to your argument.
