Agency with the Active voice

Using the active voice in our writing allows us to better spotlight our protagonist. It creates immediacy which highlights the character’s agency and the active role they play in driving the narrative. Here is how we can switch to using the active voice.

CONSIDER THE CONTEXT

1. Determine who are the people carrying out the actions and place them as the subject of the sentence.
  • Passive voice

The loud cheers were given by my dancemate.

My first dance showcase was completed by me!

  • Active voice

My dance mates encouraged me with screams of delight.

I had conquered my first dance showcase!

2. Develop your writing, keeping the main actors as the subject of your sentences.
  • Passive voice

“Go Paul!” The loud cheers were given by my dance mates. The encouragement served as fuel for my dance routine. The music beat was felt throughout the room.

1–2–and 3. The final pose was struck, and my showcase was complete

  • Active voice

“Go Paul!” My dance mates encouraged me with screams of delight, and I threw myself into the routine and let the music carry me.

1–2–and 3. I flung my right arm in the air confidently and struck the final pose. I had conquered my first dance showcase!
