FOR

Use FOR when the reason or purpose is a noun. Nouns are people, places, objects or concepts.

Carrie is going to/for a football match at the national stadium.

The reason: football match is a noun.

TO

Use TO when the reason is a verb. Verbs are actions, occurrences or states of being.

Carrie is wearing the jersey of her favourite team to/for show her support.

The reason: show is a verb.
