UNDERSTANDING THE QUESTION REQUIREMENTS

A fundamental skill in any piece of situational writing is being able to craft your message to achieve your goal. To do so, you need to stay focussed on what the question is asking of you.

Distracted

You do not keep to the question prompt that tells you what your task is and who you are making the decision for. As a result, you may make your recommendation or choice for the wrong reasons.

Focussed

Each point you make directly goes towards achieving your task. As you write your points, you constantly ask yourself, who are you making your recommendation or decision for and who is your message meant to impact?

UNDERSTANDING THE QUESTION REQUIREMENTS

EXAMPLE
Write a speech to be presented to your sports CCA team on why they should all watch the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Summer Games to prepare for your upcoming competition.

Distracted

The Summer Olympic Games are a much anticipated event and all the more so since they had to be postposed last year. For those of you who like to read, you might also be interested to catch up on the history of the Olympics and its significance in our culture today.

Focussed

As we train for our upcoming competition season, I am sure we have much to learn from watching the Summer Olympic Games. The examples of sportsmanship, grit and determination displayed by the Olympians are sure to motivate and spur us on.

UNDERSTANDING THE QUESTION REQUIREMENTS

Your older brother has offered to buy a fitness gift for you which will improve your activity levels during your busy exam period. Write to your brother to say which gift you have chosen and why it is the best choice for you.
